How To Choose A Tarot Deck

Entry date 7/23/24

This guide will explain how to choose a tarot deck and why it is important to your tarot journey! This will also help you feel more connected if you're struggling with readings.

Why is choosing a tarot deck important?

Choosing a deck is like finding your soulmate but without the awkward small talk. Each deck has its own personality, its own quirks, and its own story line. So how do you pick the one that's just right for you? First and foremost, look for a deck with a story line that resonates with you. Imagine your tarot deck as a book where each card is a chapter. When you connect with the story line, the messages flow effortlessly. Think of it as your own personal fairytale with you as the hero!

Art Style / Imagery of Tarot Cards

Some people love intricate details with vibrant colors, while others prefer simplicity and elegance. Remember, you'll be looking at these cards a lot so pick a style that makes your heart flutter. And if the art style includes a fairy or two, well that's just a bonus!

Size Matters!

Size matters when it comes to tarot decks. Some decks are as big as a spellbook, while others are compact and travel friendly. Choose a size that feels comfortable in your hands. You don't want to be fumbling with the cards the size of dragon wings! And don't forget the card stock. You want a deck that feels sturdy and durable, so it can withstand all the shuffling and magical energy you'll be putting into it!

The Guidebook

A good tarot deck comes with a guide book that's helpful and wise as an old wizard! Look for one with detailed explanations, keywords, and maybe even some spreads to try out. A guide book can be your trusty sidekick on your tarot journey!

Trust Your Intuition!

Most importantly, trust your intuition! If a deck calls out to you, even if it's the last one you'd expect, give it a chance! Sometimes the magic is in the unexpected!

My Personal Journey

It really is about the deck that you choose! With my personal tarot deck journey, when choosing a deck, I started trying it with the typical rider-waite deck. The readings were just not resonating with me. I could not connect the messages, so I actually put it away and was like okay tarot is not for me. Then I got a reading from someone with a deck called the Gilded tarot. The imagery and colors on this deck were so vibrant! That's when I thought it wasn't me, it was the deck! So I went to a metaphysical shop and I looked at all the Decks that they had. It wasn't until I actually accepted that okay I'm not going to find a tarot deck here, because I did not connect with any of them. But then, as I was getting ready to walk out, I seen it out of the corner of my eye. It was the Wonderland in tarot deck and it just spoke to me! It called out to me and the worker that was there that day even let me open it up so I can feel the energy from the cards in my hands! As soon as I snapped that plastic off of it and felt that energy, I knew that was it. That deck is my main deck that I still currently use 5 years later!

Final Thoughts

It really is very important that you choose a deck that speaks to you. It is a very personal journey and you really want to be able to connect with the imagery on it which is my big tip here - To find that storyline deck because being able to connect with the storyline is going to help you connect more with the messages of the cards. You will feel more in tune with your readings as you're delivering messages! So there you have it magical beings! Choosing a tarot deck is a personal and enchanting Journey remember it's all about finding a deck that tells a story you love and makes your heart sing!
