Making Hula Hoops With Polypro Tubing

I will be turning this coil of tubing into these lovely hula hoops! They are made from the finest material called polypropylene, and they are ranging at 5/8 size. My order came form Colorado Hula Hoops on Amazon. It included the slightly smaller tube to connect the ends. Make sure you have the connecting tube! You don't have to use the polypro. Feel free to use which ever tubing you prefer!

Materials You Will Need To Make A Hula Hoop

  1. Coil of Tubing (Plus connector tube)
  2. Measuring Tape (Soft/Fabric)
  3. Drill
  4. Rivet Gun
  5. Hacksaw or Dremel
  6. Rivets (Two per hoop)
  7. Push Button (One Per Hoop)

(Measure your rivets and push button diameters so you use the right drill bits to make the perfect size holes)

How To Calculate The Size Of The Hula Hoop

To calculate the size hula hoop you'd like, you take the diameter that you know you want, let's say for instance you want a hula hoop with a diameter of 30 inches. To calculate the circumference of the hula hoop, you're going to need to multiply 30 by pi which is 3.14. You multiply that and it comes to 94.2 inches. To get the feet, you divide it by 12 which is 7.85. To find how many inches exactly the .85 are, you can Google how many inches .85 of a foot is, and it converts it right there in a table for you. My tape measure is only in inches and only goes to 60. So what I did was take the 94.2 and divide in half to get 47.1. I measured that twice around to get a hula hoop with the diameter of 30 inches.

Measuring Tape Tip

You're going to need a measuring tape, and I highly recommend using a flexible, soft kind of measuring tape. Not the metal one or a stick where it's hard to bend. You want it to be able to lay flat against the surface of the tubing for accurate measurements.

Hacksaw Vs. Dremel

I did at first use a hacksaw to cut this tubing. It's took me quite some time to be able to cut through this tubing with this hacksaw. I learned very quickly that it was not the way for me. I started using a dremel and it cut through way easier. It did leave more choppy ends, but that can be broken off and sanded down. You could also use a pair of tube cutters if you prefer that way.

Cut Off The End Of the Coil

I also want to talk about how the end of the coil is a straight tube. I highly recommend cutting that straight part off right there, that way you're left with the circular part of the tubing. Not a straight tube that won't go circular and now you have an odd shaped hula hoop. xD

Make sure the connector isn't too far in

I noticed I accidentally slid this connector piece a little too far into the one side. I want to be able to have enough space to drill the hole for the snap button, so I just need to wedge it out a little bit. So do just keep that in mind when you are putting these connector pieces on the inside of the tube you don't want it to be too far on one side.

Drill holes and insert rivets

Now it's time to drill the holes! I started with drilling the holes for the rivets to connect the inner connecting tube together. I started with using a very small drill bit, just to get the hole formed, because I want this to be precise. Then you work your way up in size with the drill bits. Make sure you measured your rivets, so you know what size hole to drill. Then put the rivet gun in there and just squeezing the thing letting the rivet set in place. Doing that on both sides.

Drilling holes for push button

Time to put in the snap button! The snap button has a little bit bigger of a hole than the rivets did. So I definitely worked my way up more with drilling the hole, so that it would be a perfect hole to be able to slide the snap button right in. Drill the hole on the connector tube thats sticking out of the hoop, putting it on the outter side. Slide the button right in, making sure you are lined up with the hole. Go slow, you don't want to slide past the hole as it may be extremely hard to get back out! Then connect the pieces together and make a small hole where the button is so you can drill the hole for the other side, making them able to snap together!

We made a collapsible hula hoop!

Yay! We have a hula hoop, a collapsible hula hoop, with a push button! They can be easily put into a bag, or easily shipped in a package, be transported a lot more easily! There we have it we have made hula hoops from just a coil of plastic! Super fun and simple to do!
